  Frequently Asked Questions:
Q.1: I cannot download a PDF file. Instead, I get a page of computer gobbledigook saying I don't have permission.

Q.2: I have found an error in the journal webpages, or I have found a typo in a NZ Journal of Ecology PDF. Who should I tell so the errors can be fixed?

Q.3: The PDF file I've downloaded has no figures in it. What's going wrong?

Q.4: Google searching the full text is great but I would really like to search just for an author or for a keyword just in a paper title. Are such advanced search capabilities planned?

Q.5: Having web access to all journal back issues is very useful. How can I get such a project funded for another journal, and how do I do it?

Q.1: I cannot download a PDF file. Instead, I get a page of computer gobbledigook saying I don't have permission.
[Note: The following response will apply once we shut the door on non-member access to volumes <3 years old. For a limited time, access to these issues is free.]

Only institutional members currently have access to the PDF articles of issues <3 years old. You will get an error if you try to download a recent PDF from a computer that doesn't have an IP address identifying it as being part of a network of a institutional subscriber. If you work at an institution that is an institutional member of the NZES, you should be able to access all of the latest PDFs from any networked work computer (if you cannot, have your IT person contact the NZES webmaster@nzes.org.nz and we will set it up). The NZES Council is currently looking into the feasibility of managing a password system so that all individual members can access issues <3 years old.

Q.2: I have found an error in the journal webpages, or I have found a typo in a NZ Journal of Ecology PDF. Who should I tell so the errors can be fixed?
All the contents and abstract webpages are dynamically generated from a large central mySQL database of citation information. We have run several careful proof-reading sweeps through the database, but with so many articles, there will certainly be a few errors left to catch. Also, most of the NZ Journal of Ecology PDF files were built by complete reconstruction from computer-read, then human-proof-read, scans. This makes for small files, which are quick to download and print out crisply. It also allowed us to ensure a high accuracy of the searchable full-text, including place names and scientific names. However, it is likely that the occasional typo still exists in some files, especially with mathematical and other special characters.

If you find a web or PDF error, please let us know and it will be corrected. Please email a description of the error, or suspected error, to webmaster@nzes.org.nz. When describing the error, make sure to include the web address of the webpage, or the file name and page number of the PDF file.

If you have printed out a PDF of a journal article and manually marked errors on it, please consider posting the print-out with the offending errors to:

Every time a PDF file is changed, it's version number will be increased. You can see the version number of a PDF file by selecting "Document Properties..." in the file menu of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Q.3: The PDF file I've downloaded has no figures in it. What's going wrong?
The earliest issues of the NZ Journal of Ecology are not yet complete. The figures have been scanned but are not yet inserted into the PDF files. At the latest, these additions will be completed by the 2005 Annual Conference at the end of August as part of an upgrade to the NZES website.

Q.4: Google searching the full text is great but I would really like to search just for an author or for a keyword just in a paper title. Are such advanced search capabilities planned?
Yes! Such a capability will be available very soon. A prototype for the Advanced Search has been built for the New Zealand Entomologist, now also online full text. The same advanced search will be incorporated into the NZ Journal of Ecology as soon as the webmaster has the time.

Q.5: Having web access to all journal back issues is very useful. How can I get such a project funded for another journal, and how do I do it?
The creation of full-text pdf files from back issues was funded by the New Zealand Government's Terrestrial and Freshwater Biodiversity Information System. This programme is devoted to making important biodiversity information widely available.

Learn about how we did it. We are including notes on how this project was constructed. Hopefully, you can learn from our mistakes and useful discoveries. The website is run from a server running open-source (free) software, LINUX, PHP, and mySQL, hosted by the The Royal Society of New Zealand.
